En la casa
I liked Guadalajara. Could I live there? Maybe. Maybe the stars will align in such a way that I end up back there someday. I definitely felt like I had more to see.
I cheated for the first time in Mexico today. I took an Uber! I am so down with travelling on public transport whenever I can. I prefer to travel with locals, it's a good way to see a place and it's cheaper. But faced with the journey to the nueva central today, I bailed on the camiones and spent 84 pesos on an Uber.
The alternative was to take me and my 25 kilos a 10 minute walk to catch one bus, before changing to another one, and I didn't have the feels for it today. I owe the travelling gods 70 pesos.
20 minutes later, after a nice chat with my friendly Uber driver, I was at the Nueva Central, and 560 pesos down for my bus ride to San Miguel de Allende. Despite its name, the Central is not in the centre but 8km out in Tlaquepaque. All the bus companies are now located in this area and Primera Plus has a massive, shiny and new terminal.
Primera Plus buses are fancy, though not quite as fancy as the Vallarta Plus one that I took to Guadalajara. You get a little snack and a drink and there are headphones, they're just not disposable. But they too have the fancy screens in the back of the TV and thankfully I was forced to watch the Nanny Diaries in Spanish. I need to get on this full immersion train!
The bus station in San Miguel de Allende is about a 10 minute drive from the centre of the city, so I jumped on a bus and found my way to the Casa of Maria and Alejandro, the family with which I would be living for the next two weeks.
Except when I arrived, Maria wasn't expecting me, and didn't have any spare rooms. This wasn't hugely surprising, because when I had submitted a registration form to the school I had heard nothing back, and when I had sent a deposit to the school, I had heard nothing back, and it was only three days earlier when I had emailed the school that they had confirmed that everything was set for my arrival, and the details of the family. Ergo, not a massive shock but also far from ideal on Sunday evening at 7:30pm.
Maria was very kind and tried to call Angelica, the Director of the school, but to no avail. I said I could check into a hostel but Maria said she had a friend that could possibly put me up for the night, and that she would take me over to check. She put on some lipstick and tidied her hair (!), and we set off towards her friend's house, and the school. As we walked past it, it just so happened that Angelica's sister was going into the school, so we ran over to speak to her and she managed to contact Angelica, who rang another lady to see if she could accommodate me.
And that was really very lucky. Because Marina and Ernesto did have space for me and I am now tucked up in my own room in their very homely casa, just 5 minutes from the school. I'm so glad it worked out this way - Maria was lovely but her home had more of a hostel vibe about it, whereas here, it feels like I am truly living with a family. And I've only been here five minutes!
First day of school tomorrow!

Little did I know that I would end up living in this casa on the left. |
